Surveying the wreckage of a neighbor's bungalow hit by a Palestinian rocket, retired Israeli official Avner Cohen traces the missile's trajectory back to an "enormous, stupid mistake" made 30 years ago.

"Hamas, to my great regret, is Israel's creation," says Mr. Cohen, a Tunisian-born Jew who worked in Gaza for more than two decades. Responsible for religious affairs in the region until 1994, Mr. Cohen watched the Islamist movement take shape, muscle aside secular Palestinian rivals and then morph into what is today Hamas, a militant group that is sworn to Israel's destruction.

Instead of trying to curb Gaza's Islamists from the outset, says Mr. Cohen, Israel for years tolerated and, in some cases, encouraged them as a counterweight to the secular nationalists of the Palestine Liberation Organization and its dominant faction, Yasser Arafat's Fatah. Israel cooperated with a crippled, half-blind cleric named Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, even as he was laying the foundations for what would become Hamas. Sheikh Yassin continues to inspire militants today; during the recent war in Gaza, Hamas fighters confronted Israeli troops with "Yassins," primitive rocket-propelled grenades named in honor of the cleric.

Netanyahu: Money to Hamas part of strategy to keep Palestinians divided

“Now that we are supervising, we know it’s going to humanitarian causes,” the source said, paraphrasing Netanyahu.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended Israel’s regular allowing of Qatari funds to be transferred into Gaza, saying it is part of a broader strategy to keep Hamas and the Palestinian Authority separate, a source in Monday’s Likud faction meeting said.
Netanyahu explained that, in the past, the PA transferred the millions of dollars to Hamas in Gaza. He argued that it was better for Israel to serve as the pipeline to ensure the funds don’t go to terrorism.
“Now that we are supervising, we know it’s going to humanitarian causes,” the source said, paraphrasing Netanyahu.

Сложное положение

Вчера вечером премьер Нетаньяху и министр обороны Израиля Галант, наконец, смогли выдавить из себя, что ХАМАС будет уничтожен.

То есть произошел переход от грозных, но обтекаемых формулировок к прямому утверждению об уничтожении ХАМАС как цели.

А незадолго до того Нетаньяху заботливо напомнили, что поддержка ХАМАС для разделения палестинцев - это его стратегия (описание из 2019 года):

Положение Нетаньяху сложное: надо и самому выкручиваться, чтоб с него шкуру живьем не содрали по итогам, и как-то делать так, чтобы стратегия по разделению палестинцев работала. А то, предположим, получится большой кровью зачистить Газу от ХАМАС, а потом ррраз и с международной помощью там окажется Палестинская администрация.

Что-то мегаинтриган будет пытаться сотворить. Навскидку видится вариант замены ХАМАС на другую враждебную Палестинской администрации группировку. Этакий ребрендинг палестинской террористической угрозы. Организовать большую войну с Ираном и втянуть туда США - тоже вариант, но американцы - кроме кретинов - очень не хотят. Плюс часть американцев очень давно на Нетаньяху зуб точит.
